‘First of all, David Tennant is brilliant – not just from Doctor Who but also Casanova and Einstein and Eddington.’ I tell her that I saw him play Hamlet at Stratford, and there was an aura of madness about him. ‘He’s not like that in real life; he’s fun and sweet and kind,’ she gushes. ‘I’d been told by seven or eight people that he was the loveliest man in show business, so he had this pedestal that I put him on before I’d even met him, but he was absolutely lovely.’
Did Suranne find David Tennant attractive? Was there a spark?
‘He is sexy.’ She blushes, and shifts in her chair. ‘He’s got that kind of…I’m going to say geek chic. I don’t know if that’s right. I hope that he’ll appreciate that! David’s a lovely kisser, but afterwards I kind of felt very much, “God, that felt really wrong!” And the director went, “Good, that should feel wrong!” It felt as if I shouldn’t be doing it but my character just couldn’t help herself because that’s what the power of love – attraction – does to people.’
Suranne, inevitably, brings the conversation back to David Tennant.
‘David is like Kiefer: not conventionally handsome but he gives off this aura, it’s all about intelligence… David is tall, too, which is a bonus, as I’m 5ft 8in. I could fit under his arm, which doesn’t happen very often.’
